The first event featured a richly allusive performance of La Passion selon Sade, a work in which Sylvano Bussotti presents the Sadean literary classic as figured through the classical tradition of Italian opera. The second event paired the Bussotti’s most recent theater piece with his breakthrough work. Completed in 1960, Pieces de chair II combines erotic texts by Jean Genet, Aldo Braibanti, Antonio Machado, and James Joyce with fragments of ancient texts. The result is a unique kaleidoscopic portrait of the diversity of musical innovation that characterized the late 1950s. Silvano Sylvano is the operatic autobiography of the composer. The project will conclude with another evening featuring the music of Sylvano Bussotti (in preparation).
